Spiral (2021)
Genre: Horror/ Thriller
Time: 1h 33mins
Director: Darren Lynn Bousman
Quick Summary: A criminal mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in Spiral, the terrifying new chapter from the book of Saw.
This doesn't exist to me. Spiral? Never heard of it.
Who even thought of this. What supposedly makes this one different to every single Saw film, apparently, is that Jigsaw is apparently targeting corrupt cops. How original. Then this film has the nerve to have a line saying Jigsaw doesn't target cops. Poor John is rolling in his grave.
This feels so tiring and was honestly so hard to get through. It literally spirals down into disappointment the longer this goes on. Everything feels so rushed and not actually planned out. The twist, I'm not sure if I've just become desensitized to "Saw" twists or if this twist was just predictable and boring.
Don't even get me started on the traps. Most of them are not shown in full but instead through quick glimpses of a flashback, and they're all just so uninteresting. A lot of them are built in places which make no sense either, like a subway tunnel. Surely a train would come along and destroy the trap before the dude even gets in it. They all feel very unescapable as well, and more like just a simple torture device. Maybe that's just the point, but it just didn't sit right with me. I think somewhere down the line, the point of these traps has been discarded just so people can see some mindless brutality and violence.
The main character, who happens to be a cop, surprise, surprise, I found difficult to like. He's brash, loud, arrogant to every bit of help he gets, and determined to do it alone regardless of how out of his element he is. Also, he feels like the most inexperienced Cop I have ever witnessed because he is absolutely useless and figures out the "Clues" way too late to save anyone. I think his only personality trait was "I don't want a partner >:("
The acting was horrible too. Didn't anyone learn to act in this? Barely any emotions were shown, unless it's serious or anger. This added to horrible dialogue makes this so hard to get through. Who would have thought of a film made in 2021, it was full of so many cliches.
It's sad to see that after so many films, the original point has been cast away for stupid twists and mindless brutality.
2/10
