How can you dislike this? I get that it's not how the original films were, but I actually like this new direction.
I will say that yes, the script is pretty bland and not a lot of the characters are really developed. They're just there to further the plot at times. As well there are a few things that happen in this, which lead to questions about the continuity, or timeline of the Alien series. A good handful of the characters are pretty stupid as well, like taking off their helmets in an unknown atmosphere or trying to befriend an obviously hostile alien creature.
The look of this film screams Science-Fiction and it looks so stunning. I love how clean everything looks and that I am still able to believe that they are on a spacecraft. The cinematography is brilliant too, with beautiful shots of landscapes, or detailed close-ups of things. It has a big eerie feeling to it that really works with this film.
One Actor I will praise is Michael Fassbender who is brilliant in this. For most of this film, I was just waiting for more screen time for him as I found him so interesting and enjoyable to watch. The rest I just groaned at. There are a lot of character motivations that aren't fully clear unless you really pay attention, or look between the lines, which I can understand why it would frustrate people and confuse them. But honestly, it just requires people to think a little harder.
Although the story has problems, it has moments of tension, thought-provoking parts, and thrilling moments. The haunting music adds to the atmosphere. I did really like the ties to Greek mythology, literally going along the story of Prometheus, as well i liked how violent this is too. There is one scene where a character performs a semi-self-surgery to remove some foreign object from themself or an alien brutally breaks another character's arm.
While this isn't the same as previous Alien films, this keeps a lot of elements from it. The tight corridors, the high tension, the eerie feeling you get, it's quite violent and it keeps up with using pretty good twists. This isn't anything groundbreaking, but it is worth being praised a bit more than it is.
7/10
"Charlie Holloway: What we hoped to achieve was to meet our makers. To get answers. Why they even made us in the first place.
David: Why do you think your people made me?
Charlie Holloway: We made you because we could.
David: Can you imagine how disappointing it would be for you to hear the same thing from your creator?"
