Ratatouille (2007)

Genre: Comedy/ Fantasy

Time: 1h 51mins

Director: Brad Bird

Quick Summary: A rat who can cook makes an unusual alliance with a young kitchen worker at a famous Paris restaurant.

I think I watched this so many times as a kid its probably why I love to cook.

There is always something so charming about pixar films. They have such a soft eye pleasing style, and this is no different except there are moments that look stylistically real. Such as during the cooking moments. They really made that food look appetising. Its almost like watching those ASMR cooking videos but with French music and a cute little rat. The colors are very lush and detailed; very accurate toward a real city-scape.

This is one of those feel good films that you can't hate. Its so relaxing to watch this, even during some of the more action based scenes. Most Pixar movies actually contain very mature messages and this one is no different. It teaches kids that anyone can do anything and be from anywhere. There shouldn't be prejudice towards what someone wants to do and also we shouldn't be as harsh on people.

For a kids films too there is so much character development that goes on and I'm so glad it doesn't become overwhelming too. People actually change for the better in this.

Something I really like is we get to mostly see things from Remy, the rat's perspective and see i guess how huge and terrifying is to someone of his size. The camera follows him as he scampers through walls or under ovens, and really this camera work is what makes this film so good.

There are various mixes of humour that I adore in this. You've got your obvious kids jokes that appeal to them; quirky slapstick with people getting hit with things, jumping around in wierd ways and getting grabbed as well as more kidie like jokes. Then there are the no so obvious kids jokes like when the guy is talking about his little chef (the rat) to another female character who glances downwards when he mentions it. I mean there is also a guy literally called Alfredo Linguini.

You thought I almost missed the cooking aspect of this film. The cooking oh man. Its so pretty and aesthetic and so relaxing to watch this little rat cook. I praise the people who thought of the ways for this little guy to interact with human sized objects just so he could cook. I could honestly watch hours of this cutie cook.

Perfect film, I expect nothing less from Pixar. So charming and just relaxing.

10/10

Emile: Oh, I'm detecting nuttiness..."
