Saw IV (2007)

Genre: Horror/ Thriller

Time: 1h 43mins

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman

Quick Summary: Despite Jigsaw's death, and in order to save the lives of two of his colleagues, Lieutenant Rigg is forced to take part in a new game, which promises to test him to the limit.

I think this is somewhat flawed but still, I think it's a must-watch within the Saw franchise.

The acting is pretty good in this, Mandylor is really good as Detective Hoffman, even though he has limited screen time and dialogue, I'm sure we'll see plenty of him later on. I liked Patterson a lot because of the toughness and reality he brought to the character. Agent Strahm is a good character but is actually kind of forgettable. One big surprise was Lyric Bent as Rigg. He definitely showed a lot of range in this movie and I liked a lot of the moral questioning he brought. One thing I will note that actually really frustrated me was that Hoffman and Strahm look incredibly similar and a lot of the time it was slightly difficult to tell who was who in certain scenes.

The plot of the movie is structured in a bit of a complex way, involving three different subplots simultaneously. But then this is made even more complex by the fact that there are also answers given to questions that were raised in the first three movies. This can get pretty confusing at times and hard to follow, but the film manages to keep going at a nice pace so that you're not too confused.

The traps were pretty interesting in this one as this time around this person is being challenged to think and be like Jigsaw himself, forcing people into their traps, showing this person the horrors of what they have done. It's one big lesson designed to make you think about these people. They're honestly quite brutal as well, one being a woman having her hair wrapped around some gears that is slowly ripping her scalp away from her head.

Don't worry there are still a good few twists in this, even if they might confuse you slightly and they aren't as good as the previous ones, but they will still shock you. It keeps with the frantic flashbacks and hectic editing which was a bonus though I did notice the grainy green look has disappeared which was a shame to see.

I think this is definitely on the weaker side of things, but still worth a watch. There are some good life lessons in this too which I enjoyed and you learn even more about Jigsaw's background which honestly I found to be quite sad.

7/10
