A Haunting in Venice (2023)
Genre: Mystery/Crime
Time: 1h 40mins
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Quick Summary: In post-World War II Venice, Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly attends a seance. But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer.
Just saying, I figured this out within the first 30 minutes.
I did like the cinematography as it had some interesting angles and surprisingly a lot of close-ups, as well some interesting angles. On the flip side, it annoyed me as they revealed so much in the beginning through the use of these shots (I won't spoil anything) but the things they chose to show you at the start of the mystery unfolding, I picked up on as they were just too obvious. That added with a few lines casually mentioned that seemed way too obviously placed to be not important, I pieced together the mystery too quickly which is where a lot of my dissatisfaction is with this film.
Acting-wise, everyone was okay. I wouldn't say I was overly impressed with anyone, but nobody was awful. The characters were interesting, yes, but it felt like nobody really put effort into them. Honestly, they were all a bit lacklustre, even when they were being introduced, but they managed to keep the film semi-interesting.
An actual good thing I will say about this is that it managed to pull off creepy incredibly well. The atmosphere was brilliant at being spooky and honestly a bit terrifying at times. It also had a few good jumpscares surprisingly. I loved the setting of Venice as it's so pretty to look at during the day, as has some wonderful architecture.
The ending felt way too quick and anti-climatic as well. I remember thinking "Oh, that was quick." in the cinema. The pacing was all over the place and admittedly, it was pretty rushed through some important moments. It did have a few funny moments with dialogue that I did chuckle at.
I wouldn't rush to see this unless you are a fan of the director or this style of film.
4/10
