I got way too happy when I saw the web wings

After watching nearly all the Spiderman films, I am so so glad that they didn't go through his origin story again. They skipped right into Peter Parker doing his thing, even though it was basically pining for Tony Stark's attention. We get to see him semi-action straight away, doing the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman thing. It's also pretty neat to see a more technical spidery suit with the addition of a really funny AI assistant too.

I like how fun this version of Spiderman is. He's supposed to be fun, lighthearted, and a bundle of jokes because he is a teenager still. Toby Maguire had the awkwardness nailed but was too serious as Spiderman, Andrew Garfield had the fun side of things sorted but was nowhere an awkward nerdy guy. Tom Holland on the other hand is a perfect balance of both. He's absolutely loveable. It's like a puppy that so desperately wants your attention so he keeps doing little tricks, and I'm loving it. There is a sort of innocence to this spiderman that feels so refreshing.

Another thing I'm really glad about is they didn't focus too much on the romance side of things. There is a little bit of one but it actually ends up being really relevant to the story, and it doesn't take up half the film (*cough cough* Sami Rami’s Mary Jane). It's a cute High-school romance, it doesn't need to be overly dramatic. Instead of having a romantic interest as a sidekick, we get Ned. I loved Ned. He is adorable and stupid at the same time. I'm pretty sure I would be Ned if I found out my best friend is Spiderman because I would also ask all the stupid questions like ‘Do you lay eggs?’. It was good comedic relief, not that this film needed it. That also goes for this instalment's MJ. She was more of a popup character who is in the background of what's going on, not totally bothered and just wants to read a book. That said she was pretty funny too given the chance.

As for the villain. Loved him. It was absolutely terrifying watching this dude in action, the design was equally as terrifying as the mesh of alien and human technology created such a cool-looking version of the Vulture. You know what we actually get some depth with this guy too which is always a bonus, including a surprise twist that I had forgotten about. I may or may not have sided with the villain a little but during his epic bad guy monologue though. Micheal Keaton is brilliant at playing dudes like this and he really knocks this role on the head.

This is the Spiderman film we needed for such a long while and I look forward to the last two with Tom Holland. It doesn't rehash the stuff we already know and makes a new storyline. It's quirky and also makes me deeply miss Iron Man.

10/10

"Peter Parker: I'm sick of Mr. Stark treating me like a kid.

Ned Leeds: But you are a kid.

Peter Parker: Yeah. A kid who can stop a bus with his bare hands."

"[Peter jumps out of his position and tries to swing, only to plummet face-first into the ground]

Peter Parker: What the hell just happened?

Karen: You jumped off a sign and landed on your face."

"The rich, the powerful, like Stark, they don't care about us! The world's changed boys, time we change too!"

  2. When he drops that lego deathstar, you know someone on set made that for that scene specifically to be dropped.
