A Bug's Life (1998)

Genre: Comedy/ Adventure

Time: 1hour 35mins

Directors: John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton

Quick Summary: A misfit ant, looking for "warriors" to save his colony from greedy grasshoppers, recruits a group of bugs that turn out to be an inept circus troupe.

Flik is the type of guy I'd marry.

For a first-time production film, this was okay! It was fun and sort of simple. It was pretty easy to predict what was going to happen. But who cares? This is a kid's film, so it's a bonus that adults can enjoy it too. Speaking of the humour in this was really funny, especially through the delivery of things. They manage to slip in a ton of adult jokes as well. Though many of the gags are directed towards kids, they didn't always land with me, an adult.

Flik is the only one I remember fully. The rest, well I wouldn't say they were bad, it's just they weren't that interesting. Flik on the other hand was adoreable, trying his best to help out and improve no matter the situation but sadly something always goes wrong and he desperately tries to fix it. I pitied him a lot of the time

Admittedly the villain in this is actually terrifying and realistic. Someone could quite easily copy the same scenario in real life. This to me is very important because then it shows kids that this is not okay. Though if I was a kid, I would be terrified of the villain.

I did find the animation to be really hit-or-miss. A good portion of it was very pretty and incredibly impressive for the time. But sometimes things just didn't seem right, like the bird or occasionally the character models didn't seem to fit in with the background.

This isn't perfect but honestly, it holds its own. It's still an enjoyable and easy watch.

"Slim: [stuck among branches] Francis! Francis, I'm stuck!

Francis: Where are you?

Slim: I'm over here.

Francis: Where?

Slim: Here!

[irritated]

Slim: I'm the only stick with eyeballs!"

"Fly: Hey, waiter, I'm in my soup."

"Slim: That's no way to speak to a lady.

Francis: I heard that you twig."
