Toy Story 3 (2010)
Genre: Family/ Adventure
Time: 1h 43mins
Director: Lee Unkrich
Quick Summary: The toys are mistakenly delivered to a daycare centre instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.
I will never emotionally recover from this.
Still going incredibly strong hitting harder than ever with such an emotionally rich story that really hits home on nostalgia. The characters are as loveable as they have always been and it is so wonderful to see them with even more personality.
The storyline for all of these films shares some similar plot lines in the idea that being discarded and unwanted when one becomes old or outdated is a constant source of anxiety for the toys, and this does an excellent job of depicting their struggle to overcome these feelings. Through it all, the movie manages to be both uplifting and thought-provoking, as it reminds us of the importance of love, acceptance, and self-worth. This is so important to young kids, and this shows it to them in such a gentle way.
Another theme this explores is that letting go is hard, but sometimes it is time to move on for better things. As well as not being able to let go of someone. It's sad but sweet and will more than likely make you cry (I did).
This time, thanks to an incredible script, there's more suspense, more drama, and many more surprises. Like any spectacular trilogy, it wraps up all loose ends. It's hard to find any flaws or slow moments in this. This is honestly a masterpiece in my eyes. The last 20 minutes are so touching too.
It wouldn't be a toy story without the laughs either. This is so fun. At one point Buzz accidentally gets switched to Spanish mode and all sorts of shenanigans happen. There are so many layers added to the humour too, small adult jokes that aren't offensive or too much for kids, and silly little moments that will surely make you chuckle. The start of this is actually a scene from Andy's imagination as he's playing with the gang and honestly, it's so sweet and fun, it really captures the joy of children playing.
The introduction of new characters is so smooth too. One I absolutely loved was Ken. He was just so extra and added a nice element of campy fun humour to the story. I would have loved to see much more of him because honestly, he made me laugh so much.
I adore this one so much. You will cry. You will laugh. This is honestly a perfect movie that everyone can enjoy as while being incredibly enjoyable for kids, it is equally incredibly mature.
10/10
"Barbie: Authority should derive from the consent of the governed, not from the threat of force!"
"Jessie: Buzz! We're your friends!
Buzz Lightyear: Spare me your lies, temptress! Your emperor's defeated, and I'm immune to your bewitching good looks."
"Mr. Potato Head: [after spending the night in the daycare sandbox] It was cold and dark, nothing but sand and a couple of Lincoln Logs.
Hamm the Piggy Bank: Eh... I don't think those were Lincoln Logs."
