Scream VI (2023)

Genre: Horror/ Slasher

Time: 2hours

Directors: Tyler Gillett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin

Quick Summary: In the next instalment, the survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter in New York City.

We're still going? Okay then

This one feels like it's dropped the whole meta self-aware theme to replace it with a film nerd. It doesn't really feel like a scream film anymore. It's just one character rambling about film rules and how she should have seen that coming.

No Dewey, or Sidney this time around which admittedly I'm thankful for. It was time for the main cast to finally leave. Then there is Gale. She feels crammed in just so they have something to reference the original films. The new cast that are from the previous film, are still okay. They're nothing compared to the original ones but it's nice to see a change of people. Shame their backstories are super dull.

Honestly, this one feels like just one big game of spot the reference instead of a film. There is a reference to any of the previous films almost every five minutes and it got pretty tiring pretty quickly. It is nice for long-time fans of the franchise, but for new people, it can be very confusing and makes for a pretty boring film. Even the opening doesn't fit.

Ghostface's motives in this are incredibly stupid. To me, it feels like they ran out of ideas but still wanted to make more movies (I hope they've fully run out of them). Honestly, they're just so ridiculous and make no sense whatsoever. Maybe that's just the point of the Ghostface killers: the criteria is to have a wild and stupid motive that has the most insignificant connection to the main character. As well after everything is explained as to why everything happened, it is the most far-fetched chain of events I have ever heard.

There were two cool scenes admittedly, One being a stealth mission around a corner shop while Ghostface has a shotgun; the second is an intense stalking from Ghostface on a crowded tube train.

One thing I will poke fun at is the sheer amount of stabbings people can take in this. Are they gods? Because one person gets stabbed multiple times heavily in the chest and back around twenty times, and somehow survives. I'm all for suspension of belief for films, but that one is a bit far. Also, The main character being related to the original killer somehow makes her a serial killer? I'm not sure that's how genetics work. This then becomes the obsession of our main character and becomes incredibly annoying instantly.

This feels mostly like a cash grab for people nostalgic towards the scream films. Nice for fans, but that's it really. Please no more. I don't know if I can take any more bizarre random twists that make no sense.

4/10

"I got it wrong again. Fuck this franchise!"

"Gale Weathers: [Over the the phone with the killer] Can you hold, please.
The Voice: [confused] Huh?"

"If the killers last time were whiny snowflake film nerds with Letterboxd accounts instead of personalities"
