Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

Genre: Horror/ Slasher

Time: 1h 28mins

Director: Dwight H. Little

Quick Summary: Ten years after his original massacre, the invalid Michael Myers awakens on Halloween Eve and returns to Haddonfield to kill his seven-year-old niece. Can Dr. Loomis stop him?

Even though they basically brought Micheal magically back to life after the mess of the previous film, I'm enjoying this.

Although I was disappointed to not have Laurie Strode in this one, it was interesting to see how her legacy lives on with her daughter and now she will have the struggle with Michael Myers. As we have a child protagonist was a really fun choice! She was a really good actor, especially for her age and I really enjoyed watching her on screen. She was honestly a real delight and admittedly a really good actor.

Even without her though, this movie is a lot of fun: Loomis is back and crazier than ever, and you have the classic horror tropes and a final set piece that makes sense and is super effective.

Hopefully, the guys won't remember the end of Halloween 2 well enough to recall Laurie shooting Michael's eyes out, and him stumbling around slicing blindly as blood ran down his mask. Though this is horror, everyone's accustomed to inconsistency with horror. Right? Well, prepare for a lot of that with these films.

Admittedly Micheal doesn't do anything but stand there up until the last 30 minutes of the film. That's when the kills actually start happening. They are pretty brutal too with some clever jumpscares, including one with a rocking chair. As well I really liked one of the ending fight scenes with a rooftop chase, that was pretty intense to watch.

The plot is pretty weak sadly and really nothing actually happens for a while. As well I don't think I was a fan of how tinny the soundtrack was. It had a lot of elements of the original Halloween, but it didn't reach the same level as the first two.

So over all this is a good sequel, it's not the strongest in the series, but it's one of the better stories of the franchise. There was a nice handful of little easter eggs to the first two films which was really great to see too.

5/10

"You're talking about him as if he were a human being. That part of him died years ago."

"We're not talking about any ordinary prisoner, Hoffman! We are talking about evil on two legs."
