Trolls World Tour (2020)

Genre: Family/ Adventure

Time: 1h 35mins

Director: Walt Dohrn

Quick Summary: When the Queen of the Hard Rock Trolls tries to take over all the Troll kingdoms, Queen Poppy and her friends try different ways to save all the Trolls.

They left out everything that was funny from the first one.

Admittedly I am disappointed by this as I had enjoyed the first one so much and assumed they would be able to improve on it. I was wrong. They kidified it in the worst way. Everyone and everything was so annoying and I wanted to bash my head in all the way through instead of only at the songs. Additionally, they gave James Corden much more screen time than he deserved, so instantly this loses a point.

Sadly everyone had been reduced to archetypes of their personalities and refused to go out of those. They even somehow did it with music genres and the people who listen to them. It no longer felt cult and fun, just a generic kids' film that assumes they can't think about things aside from the given stereotypes.

Barb, the bad guy in this, was incredibly obnoxious and dreadful to watch. She reminded me of those teenagers who have just found out what rock is, and think they're so much cooler than those "Normies". When in fact they probably listen to what their dad/grandad listened to in the 80's. Honestly, she felt a little lazy when you think about it because of course rock music is used by bad people.

What I actually liked more than the first film is the design side of things. I loved how much more fuzzy and arts and crafts it looked. Plants are made out of felt and fuzzy things, and pool noodles are used for vines and branches. Various elements that kids normally see and play with are used throughout this and honestly, to me it is so clever as it encourages them to use these items when playing, helping stimulate their imaginations. Also with this, the fact that they changed each troll's design/ anatomy depending on the music they liked/lived around was so clever. Pop trolls obviously being very rounded, plumpish, and colourful; we also get techno trolls that are neon coloured and look all computer-like (but for some reason live in the sea?) and country trolls that look like horses. My own personal favourite was the funk trolls which can be only described as furry giraffes.

I actually didn't care much for the story this time around since all it was, just going from one place. discover new trolls, fight new trolls, go to the next place and then repeat. So by the end of the film, I was honestly really bored and couldn't wait to get it over with.

Somehow. The songs were even worse than the last ones. They managed to mash together about 6 songs all at once, and it hurt my head. Imagine Gangnam Style and September bashed together with a wannabe who let the dogs out, all played within 30 seconds. Not to mention the awful covers of other songs like Barracuda and crazy train. I hated the music scenes more this time around, so instead of bashing my head against the wall I wanted to literally die.

This is obviously not up to the same standard as the first film and is nowhere near as fun. While it did have its moments where it got a chuckle or two out of me, It's lost its cuteness and replaced it with annoyance. Maybe just stick to the first film.
