28 Weeks Later (2007)

Genre: Sci-fi/ Horror

Time: 1h 40mins

Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo

Quick Summary: Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes according to plan.

Please for the love of god, someone deck these kids.

I find the music much more iconic for this one as I had heard it through general pop culture moments throughout my life, while the previous one had it slightly, this was a more well-known version and man is it good. That also goes for this opening. It's so gripping instantly and sets the foundation for a devastating story full of selfishness greed, and hopelessness. It's such a shame this the rest of this film is terrible.

Everyone makes horrible decisions, and when I say everyone, I mean everyone. Not one person has a brain during the length of this. I'll be honest it was extremely frustrating watching this as they just kept making things worse for themselves. Especially the kids in this. You'd think that after England has basically been through hell, infected everywhere, and just desolate, you'd stay in the one safe space on this island. But no, it's fun to go out and explore just to get a photo. If they weren't stupid, they were an asshole too.

It's not technically done well either which made it even more difficult to watch. Action scenes are basically shaky cam with bizarre quick cuts, and people just running around everywhere. As for the special effects. Well. A scene showing a city being firebombed looks like they just put fire explosion gifs over the actual footage. I'll compliment the look of these infected people as they do look more scary and gorey than previously. Blood literally pours out of their mouths and the attack scenes are normally flooded with lots of red.

I found this to be incredibly frustrating to watch. Characters are incredibly thin and shallow, as well as insanely stupid. The story is all over the place and there are so many plot holes or things that would not realistically happen. Like sure, let this one random dude walk around everywhere with access to military areas. He's the maintenance man.

If you liked the last one, I do not recommend this, as it hinges on the fact it's a sequel to a very well-done budget classic and people will watch it because it's the sequel. I did. I regret it.

  1. The scene near the end with the night vision in first person was pure cringe.
