Quiz Lady (2023)
Genre: Comedy
Time: 1h 39mins
Director: Jessica Yu
Quick Summary: A game-show-obsessed woman and her estranged sister work together to help cover their mother's gambling debts.
This is what happens when one sister has Autism and the other ADHD
You know what I did really enjoy this, it's nothing special or new, but it was fun. It was honestly pretty funny in a lot of places. Most of the humour comes from these two sisters interacting and they are the complete opposites to each other my god it is so relatable, as I feel like me and my own sister are the same way together. One being the quieter, awkward one and the other being very loud and extra all the time. However, some of the jokes didn't fully land with me and felt actually awkward to watch.
I think the whole premise, while being silly and a bit out there, could realistically happen. A lot of the events that happen in this could also realistically happen, and I think that is where some of the enjoyment comes from too. Something I personally enjoyed was that it was nice to see the older sister be the one who was more out there and wild.
Really this was pretty sweet by the end, as being family can be difficult at times and this shows that. But it shows how family can connect at times, and how weird it can be. But it is nice to have that person to be looking out for you, and how much it can mean to someone else. I liked just how realistic this shows how siblings can be.
Awkwafina, playing the more awkward sibling, was pretty good. Watching her shuffle around with the posture of a shrimp, I just got her. Wanting to be left alone with her TV show and her dog. Somehow, she managed to not be overshone by Sandra Oh who played the more loud and out-there sibling, who was equally as fun to watch. They worked together wonderfully, each having their own moments or using each other to land jokes brilliantly.
Whilst this isn't special, it is funny and just a good time. If you want something to pass the time or to pick you up, this is one to watch.
7/10
"Anne: There has to be some other way
Jenny: You could sell your eggs. It's not like you're using them."
