The Racket (1928)

Genre: Crime/ Noir

Time: 1h 24mins

Director: Lewis Milestone

Quick Summary: An honest police captain vows to bring down a powerful bootlegger who is protected by corrupt politicians and judges.

I think they should have waited to make this silent film into a talking film.

The main problem with this one is so much of this needs dialogue and things to be spoken about. It's incredibly slow placed and for a film that is so short it really feels long. It's honestly really boring and I couldn't wait to finish it which is a shame as it is one of the earliest forms of gangster films.

It revolves around generic crime, corruption of the police force, and the pursuit of justice, but the execution falls flat. It could have been so interesting, but it was a struggle to keep my interest. There were small moments of tension in the beginning but the longer it went on, the less there was to this.

Even with the score, it felt lacklustre. A lot of scenes are left in almost silence which really didn't help with how boring this is. Nobody had any real depth to them either and honestly, I didn't care for any of them either.

This was a challenge to get through. I even fell asleep and had to rewatch it.
