Easy A (2010)

Genre: Comedy/ Romance

Time: 1h 32mins

Director: Will Gluck

Quick Summary: When Olive lies to her best friend about losing her virginity to one of the college boys, a girl overhears their conversation. Soon, her story spreads across the entire school like wildfire.

Whenever I watch a film with Emma Stone in it I am always delightfully reminded of how much of a glorious weirdo she is. Always charming and so much fun to watch, I adored her in this because of how funny she was. I do wonder if they actually gave her any lines and just let her do improv. She killed it in this and I can't actually imagine anyone else doing this role as well as she did.

As for the humour, it's so funny and not in your typical Rom-com teenage stoner humour, but actual witty clever lines of dialogue and funny moments, that for once I did not cringe at. There are moments like when Olive and her gay friend need to pretend they're having sex so they lock themselves in a room and start shouting sex noises and sayings while banging on the wall.

It does have the usual stereotypes of highschool people, and it doesn't really branch out from that but honestly I don't care. This is the type of film you don't need depth into every single thing. They could have given a really deep and tragic backstory to the pushy Christian girl, but they didn't and it's still really good. Admittedly, only Olive gets some insight into her character but i'm still glad they only focused on her as I feel like it would have been too complex and too much if they tried to even put another plot line in.

While this is pretty funny this does actually touch on some serious matters without making fun of it. Olive pretends to be a someone who has sex a lot and makes up rumours she has had sex with the more nerdy or loser types of people for money. This ends up being mistaken for her actually having sex with people for money, and leads to a very big misunderstanding. It's nothing graphic or violent but it shows that some people do look at women for that sole purpose and honestly it's pretty sad.

Aside from that, this is pretty lighthearted. Even when it gets to a pretty wild twist which I did not see coming at all. It's sort of simple, but fun and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Emma stone is always a gem no matter what she is acting in.

10/10

"Brandon: Is there an Olive here?

Rosemary: There's a whole jar of them in the fridge!"

"Woodchuck Todd: Screw all these people, Olive!

Olive Penderghast: Haven't you heard? I already did."

"Olive Penderghast: [to Brandon, who is freaking out, as she takes off her panties] Relax. Jesus. What is it with you gays? Are you really that repulsed by lady parts? What do you think I have down there? A gnome?"
