Back To Black (2024)

Genre: Muscial/ Drama

Time: 2h

Director: Sam Taylor-Johnson

Quick Summary: The life and music of Amy Winehouse, through the journey of adolescence to adulthood and the creation of one of the best-selling albums of our time.

Man, they really didn't need to do her dirty like this.

I'm not even sure where to start with this. It feels so lazy. Honestly, I think they just read a quick summary about her life and used that, as some of the information shown in this was incorrect or they just glossed over it. There was zero depth in anything. This makes her father and Blake out as some sort of saviours to Amy when really they are what incited her downfall.

The pacing makes no sense whatsoever, and the ending just comes out of nowhere. Also, some of the most important people in her life such as Jules and Salaam are almost entirely left out. They changed a lot of details about her life too, such as how things happened or when.

I find it very sad how this story has shown Amy. She was someone who longed for a peaceful life, to be a mother, and to have others find joy in her singing. Sadly she got involved with the wrong people who forced her into drugs and being on tour constantly, people tried to use her, and she had her own problems which got out of hand. This reduces her to a simple addict and bad luck with her choice of man. This glorifies her worst moments but doesn't actually explain how she got that way or help us understand what was going on and how these people used and manipulated her.

I think the actress did very well given what she was given as a script and role. This is the closest I think we could get to someone looking and sounding like Amy so I'll give her props there. She honours her legacy the best way she could have done.

The music choices I really enjoyed and the moments when they would show the actress singing too. Maybe because it was actually Amy Winehouse singing that I was distracted momentarily, but at least they used her actual voice instead of trying the mimic it.

I'd recommend you skip this and just go watch the 2015 documentary about her life.
