Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

Genre: Comedy/ Sci-fi

Time: 1h 40mins

Director: Jeff Rowe

Quick Summary: The film follows the Turtle brothers as they work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.

I will put this straight out here. This was very average.

It took me a while to get into this, I think because of how slow the pacing was. I found myself getting bored early on and waiting for something to happen. I noticed a lot of plot points felt rushed though, like they needed to hurry through it when really it didn't need to be and could have made it a bit more interesting.

The Turtles I found to be somewhat fun, acting like actual teenagers you would see currently. They all managed to have chemistry together as well, bouncing off each other really well, along with April in really funny dialogue and reactions. Though unfortunately, I noticed they were all pretty one-note and didn't branch out of their character arcs much.

Animation-wise, I loved it. It felt very fresh and comic book-like. The Art style took me a while to like. I did like all the background and various buildings and items throughout the city being very rough and jagged, though when it came to the people's faces I wasn't overly keen on it then. It did make it unique and interesting to watch visually, but it really couldn't carry how weak the plot was.

Jackie Chan as Splinter I found really interesting. He brings a good amount of emotion and character that feels so genuine as an overprotective but kind father who has seen mankind at its worst and never wants them to have to experience it. His arc could've used more subtlety but it's still terrific.

The music for me wasn't my personal taste so I find it hard to like it, although I can see how it fits well with this film and for the current teenager popular music taste.

The villain I felt was pretty strong as well, although the group that goes along with them decided to go to the good side a bit too easily if I'm honest. It was like, Oh hey look here are the good guys they're really nice, and they went oh boy I want to join them now they look cool. It was as easy as that. Maybe if there was more of a decision or moral dilemma put in place that could have been implemented better.

As for the ending, I thought it was good and simple enough not to hate it. A few things bugged me during the ending such as the push to make a pop culture reference that teenagers are sure to like (right?) as a solution.

Honestly, this was pretty mediocre. Sure to maybe help introduce a younger audience to the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle" series, or please some long-term fans of it. This is a good way to keep it fresh though, which I can't argue against, and keep it interesting to the younger generation. Sad the art and animation are what hold this film up.

5/10
