Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Genre: Musical/ Romance

Time: 2h 7mins

Director: Baz Luhrmann

Quick Summary: A poor Bohemian poet in 1890s Paris falls for a beautiful courtesan and nightclub star coveted by a jealous duke.

A very loud and bombastic film, that overloads your senses in a wonderful way.

Now for a romance film, it's not the most unique. It has a very cliche love triangle which in the end is very obvious and predictable. Where this is refreshing is the characters, they're honestly so extravagant and full of life, there wasn't one character I disliked. Everyone had their own fleshed-out personality and all managed to keep their own spotlight in the manic and frantic nature of this film.

Ewan McGregor is absolutely amazing in this and his singing is equally as amazing. He is charismatic and really knows how to sell anything he is doing with ease. Nicole Kidman is his equal in this, being such a fun character to watch on screen, and together they produce a wonderful on-screen romance that is very emotional.

I really enjoyed a lot of the songs, constantly jumping to different ones throughout the scene, or even mashing two to three songs at once. I felt like as a majority it worked, occasionally there were a couple of songs or scenes I didn't feel worked but that may just be my own preference. It was really interesting to see something that combines, new, old and different genres to create a hybrid of a song.

Going onto the editing, I liked how frantic and quick the cuts were as it really added to the hyperactive nature of this film. It is all over the place, but it works somehow. Nothing really feels disjointed or didn't meld together. The pacing is incredibly quick, so much happens in this film that it can get a bit overwhelming, though it does slow down as it approaches the ending. Funnily enough, the ending for me felt dragged out. To me, it should have ended fifteen or twenty minutes before the actual ending.

Overall this is really fun and such an enjoyable film to watch. Visually too it is very pretty to look at, crammed with so many things to look at. The costumes were so interesting too with incredible detail to them. Everything in this honestly is so extra and flashy, which fits perfectly with such a loud and bombastic film.

8/10
