Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Genre: Horror/ Fantasy

Time: 1h 36mins

Director: Lee Cronin

Quick Summary: A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

This movie has a little bit of everything that a horror movie should have. There was a lot of gore, a lot of spooky jumpscares and moments with makeup and special effects adding to them, and it was all very tense. A great blend of CGI and practical effects still being utilized held this film up.

As much as I liked the cast, we barely got to know them before all the scary demon stuff started happening, especially the woman who gets first possessed. Since she became a big part and factor in the gore and scary stuff, you don't really feel for her as much as I feel you should. Her acting was amazing though! She killed it and was actually really terrifying to watch.

I did really like how refreshing this was from the normal Evil Dead format, Considering all of them were in a cabin in the woods, a change was really needed and it worked. The plot wasn't that complicated but I'm glad it wasn't, but choose to swap it for non-stop tension and anticipation for what is going to happen next. The characters are not that in-depth but there are interesting enough to make us want them to succeed, even if they were a bit one-note at times.

A had a bit of a problem with the first scene that we are shown that doesn't relate to the main part of the story until the very end, which was a cool addition but it was difficult to learn about one group of characters to them immediately jump into learning about a completely different group.

This is a solid horror that brings the gore. I think it's a worthy addition to the Evil Dead franchise that respects its roots but also updates it for modern audiences. It is not a groundbreaking or groundbreaking film, but it is an entertaining and satisfying one that will please fans of the genre.
