Deep Red (1975)
Genre: Horror/ Thriller
Time: 1h 38mins
Director: Dario Argento
Quick Summary: A jazz pianist and a wisecracking journalist are pulled into a complex web of mystery after the former witnesses the brutal murder of a psychic.
Even if you don't like this film, you won't forget it! It's absolutely full of extremely violent deaths that sadly have aged slightly due to the time this was made, but are still very squeamish and still have terrifying grossness to them.
The plot is a bit all over the place, I found it hard to follow a lot of the time right up until the end which I think would confuse anyone who wasn't fully paying attention. It constantly tries to bluff you by making it seem like one person is the killer and another, until the final moments when it pulls out its last buff which honestly is more confusing than anything.
Another thing was that I felt too long, a lot of scenes were dragged out. But then there are so many casual scenes of people just talking about random things, which ruined the suspense a lot for me.
What I loved about this was the music and the camerawork. Argento stylistic camera moves develop into really extreme close-ups of things in this movie. He will really go in there with the camera and go all around an object with it, I just really love how he frames his shots. The music at first I thought was very jarring and did not fit at all, but it grew on me and became an iconic piece to this film and set the feeling of dread set.
The kills are super memorable, I won't say what most of them are as those scenes are always ones you have to see to believe. Though one kill that I find memorable is this guy who gets his head and mouth smashed onto the edge of a marble surface and it is so unbelievably violent.
This is an enjoyable film, might not be for everyone, but it's worth watching if you're a fan of gore or the director.
