Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

Genre: Family/Action

Time: 1h 56mins

Directors: Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, Rodney Rothman

Quick Summary: After gaining superpowers from a spider bite, Miles Morales protects the city as Spider-Man. Soon, he meets alternate versions of himself and gets embroiled in an epic battle to save the multiverse.

First of all, the animation. Stunning.

It is so sleek and smooth, blasting right out of a comic book surpassing anything any live-action movie could do. It's fresh, intricately textured with halftone dots and cute little squiggles when spidey senses go off. What I also loved was how expressive everything was, even though it was cartoonish there was subtly layered within it. There seems to have been no limit allowed here, and the end result is an animation style that feels completely and totally new.

What impressed me about this film is that it set a reminder to the viewer that Spider-Man is in fact, Human, and it explores all the emotions that come with embracing a new responsibility. This film throws a lot at you, but nothing feels rushed. Funnily enough on the same side of the coin, nothing gets boring as a lot of the main cast have the exact same backstory which does get retold a few times.

The one problem I has was the pacing was too quick for me, though I feel that is just a preference. A few of the plot points are sped through that I do wish they lingered and explored. Especially one character's death scene, which felt extremely rushed and left no emotional impact on me. More importantly, it could have been much more of a much better development device.

Not that I found Miles relatable, but I can honestly see how a lot of teenagers will. A lot of people around his age get overwhelmed and feel out of place, no matter what they do. You really do feel sorry for him as he is literally a kid who has been thrown into this life of SpiderMan. Miles is so likeable he is very enduring, and you really root for him. Honestly, he is the highlight of this movie.

This is endlessly fun despite its flaws, and it's a really good origin and coming-of-age story that is most definitely worth the watch.
