Baby Driver (2017)

Genre: Action/Crime

Time: 1h 55Mins

Director: Edgar Wright

Quick Summary: Doc forces Baby, a former getaway driver, to partake in a heist, threatening to hurt his girlfriend if he refuses. But the plan goes awry when their arms dealers turn out to be undercover officers.

I have never witnessed a film that was so audibly so pleasing. Wild and energetic I don't think you'll forget this one anytime soon.

The soundtrack for this is perfection. The scenes are made to fit around each song, editing, camerawork and pacing. It's all about movement and rhythm and it's so entrancing to watch as cars speed by and guns shoot in time to the music.

This film isn't too heavy on the plot, it's actually really simple and easy to follow. You can kinda predict the beats of what will happen, and sadly I didn't care for any of the characters except our main, Baby. Really thinking about it, can be good, since you want to see him get out of this messy situation but that also means the others are almost unimportant. They're all stereotypes basically. It's a surface-level story, nothing deep, which isn't bad at all, especially if you are here to watch some musical action scenes.

There is one romance subplot which left me a bit confused. You don't really get to see much of the two together aside from one big date, and little diner drop-ins, so when it came to the big finale I was a bit lost on why they went together. Yes, it could be put down to the thrill of not knowing and living life without a care, but essentially these two people are strangers.

Where this film really shines is the stuntwork. All the car scenes are so thrilling to watch, they get you at the edge of your seat. A gunfight set to 'Tequila' by Button Down Brass is excellent, every bullet and reload timed to the beat of the song is honestly one of my favourite scenes. You can tell there was a passion for the music behind the scenes of this film.

Baby Driver is an enthralling audio-filled ride, paired with sharp editing to full effectiveness. Don't expect much of a story, but be prepared for a visual thrill.

9/10

  1. Edgar Wright is a master when it comes to story beats, both in the story and music sense.
