Men In Black (1997)

Genre: Action/Sci-Fi

Time: 1h 38mins

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld

Quick Summary: A police officer joins a secret organization that polices and monitors extraterrestrial interactions on Earth.

Overall this is an entertaining movie that is actually really funny. The good thing about this is it doesn't take itself seriously, it basks in all the silliness producing jokes through subtlety that really works. It's all done through side glances or nudges which I really liked. Will Smith and Tommy Jones work really well together and have amazing comedic timing, whilst being opposites of each other.

The world-building is actually incredible in this, with tons of unique aliens that never need explaining. I like that they just existed with humans, in secret, and all the secret agents act as if this absolutely normal tops it off. Danny Elfman doing the soundtrack was both surprising and amazing, and he did a fantastic job of it with Will Smith's added rap songs, this film is brought together nicely.

The main thing about this is the practical effects that are mixed with CGI. Yes the CGI hasn't fully held up but that brings a sort of odd style to it that works with the film. In the end, it is impressive to look at especially when you think of when it came out. Honestly, that is the only dated part of this film.

Now the plot is a bit wobbly in this, but they manage to fill that problem with fun and flashy action. In one scene an alien's head is blown off during a debate, but then it quickly grows back and continues like nothing happened. Honestly, it is the perfect length for a film like this, it doesn't go on or drag scenes out but then it doesn't seem to rush through them.

Where the film went wrong personally for me, was that they added a villain. Honestly, they could have done really well without it, just watching the pair go through the film, meeting various aliens and doing a couple of cases. The villain feels a bit added on and the ending too feels incredibly anticlimactic.

8/10

"Jay: Did you ever flashy-thing me?

Kay: No.

Jay: I ain't playing with you, K. Did you ever flashy-thing me?

Kay: No."

"Kay: So what do you think?

Jay: Whew! Very interesting. She got a whole "queen of the undead" thing going on...

Kay: What about the body?

Jay: Great body...

Kay: The DEAD body."
