Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

Genre: Musical/ Romance

Time: 2h

Director: Vincente Minnelli

Quick Summary: Young love and childish fears highlight a year in the life of a turn-of-the-century family.

There is something about this that I just find so heartwarming. It's so lovely to watch this and just enjoy being in this film's moment. Honestly, it's one of the most wholesome films I've seen. It's a wonderfully delightful musical. There is so much charm to this, you can't help but have a nice time watching this and forget about all your cares.

To be honest, there wasn't actually much of a plot, but I'm glad about that as really it didn't need a plot to be worth it. Essentially you're watching the life of a really close family go through difficult times for various characters and how they all come together to help each other.

Judy Garland is absolutely wonderful and charming as expected within this. You can't help but adore her as she dreamily sways around the house, singing about how she's in love. Her voice is so lovely to listen to as well, being equally as dreamy as this film.

The colours in this as well are just so pretty. Along with the costumes, the visual part of this is so nice to watch as the characters flit around during their daily events. Everything to do with this is ever so romantic.

The sad thing about this is that it is not for everyone. As there isn't a plot, not much happens so a good handful of people will not enjoy this. As well this was a very different time to now, so many different views have changed. Such as people falling in "Love" the second they meet each other and jumping to get married as soon as they can. Or even the father being the one to control the household with no questions asked. It may not agree with everyone. To add to this, even though the songs are pleasant to listen to, I found them to be boring and not that impressive.

This is wonderfully charming, and such a lovely experience for when you want to forget about your own life for a little while. It may not be for everyone but it is certainly delightful.

"Meeting him across the lawn for the first time would be so ordinary. I don't want to be just introduced to him. I want it to be something strange and romantic and something I'll always remember."
