Oliver! (1968)
Genre: Musical/ Thriller
Time: 2h 33mins
Director: Carol Reed
Quick Summary: After being sold to a mortician, young orphan Oliver Twist runs away and meets a group of boys trained to be pickpockets by an elderly mentor in 1830s London.
This absolutely stands the test of time. This is a true gem that captures the essence of the source material while adding its own magical touch and so much more.
The whole cast brings the characters to life with unparalleled charisma and wonderful performances. Mark Lester's portrayal of Oliver, is both heartwarming and convincing. His innocence and vulnerability make him an endearing protagonist, and Lester's performance shines throughout the entire film. Ron Moody's portrayal of Fagin is equally exceptional, adding depth and humour to the character, and making him memorable and sympathetic, though admittedly he terrified me, even as an adult.
Before I talk about anything else, I need to talk about the music. They are all brilliant in their own ways and each one is memorable. I'm pretty sure more people know them without even watching the film. Each one is a grand spectacle with amazing complex choreography that is so memorising. There are so many layers to each song as things go on in the background, each and every movement done with brilliant precision.
What truly sets this apart is its ability to balance darkness and light. The story doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of poverty and exploitation, yet it manages to infuse moments of joy, hope, and resilience.
I'll be honest. This is a cinematic masterpiece that had me glued to the screen. Its timeless story, memorable characters, exceptional performances, and unforgettable musical numbers. Whether you're a fan of classic cinema, musicals, or simply compelling storytelling, "Oliver!" is a treasure that deserves a special place in your heart.
10/10

Fagin: Shut up and drink your gin."
