Napoleon (2023)

Genre: War/ Action

Time: 2h 38mins

Director: Ridley Scott

Quick Summary: An epic that details the checkered rise and fall of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine.

You know, I didn't expect this to be so funny that it breached comedy territory.

We all love our freaky little guy Joaquin Phoenix to play freaky little guys, and honestly, if it wasn't for his acting this in I would have stopped watching. He makes Napoleon look like a complete joke of a man and I love it. Really nobody else could play this guy who when he gets horny makes horse and pig noises. Though admittedly, I don't think he was handed the best of scripts as some of the stuff he said came across like he was trying to say a joke half the time.

Don't get me wrong, this is a stunning film. The battle scenes are breathtaking and rammed full of action. But sadly, there are only a handful of them and even then they're pretty brief. Really this film was more about him and his wife Josephine, which is fine if the story fully focused on them. It constantly flicks back and forwards to different parts of his life and honestly, it feels really disjointed.

The designs of everything from the interior to the costumes were pretty impressive, as to me they felt like they fit really well. Shame it didn't make this any more interesting.  Much of this film shows his infatuation and on-again-off-again relationship with Josephine, which is mostly about them having sex. A lot of backstory isn't given either, such as Josephine's kids who pop up once or two just to move the plot forward with a handful of dialogue.

I was pretty disappointed by this, I expected more. It was dull in a lot of places and boring. Admittedly I almost fell asleep during the last 30 minutes. A lot of the fault falls down to how much it jumps around and shows snapshots of moments, to then draw out the scenes with Napoleon and his wife. As well, for someone who knew nothing about Napoleon, I still know nothing except he was a pretty horny guy.

3/10

  1. I know less about napoleon than I did previoisly before watching this film, but it did have some genuinely funny lines which it probably shouldn't have in my opinion.
