Supergirl (1984)
Genre: Sci-fi/Action
Time: 2h 30mins
Director: Jeannot Szwarc
Quick Summary: After losing a powerful orb, Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch.
To me, straight off the bat, this felt like some sort of fan fiction someone has written after watching the Superman films. Don't get me wrong though, this isn't completely unwatchable.
I like that this stands on its own and doesn't rely on Superman. I mean there are a lot of mentions of him but it's not a carbon copy of him. I mean for a start, Our heroine faces a witch in battle.
Helen Slater I liked in this a lot, she portrayed a much more innocent, sweet hero who is excited to explore Earth's socialities and experiences. I liked how they showed Supergirl learning her abilities when she first landed on Earth. It showed a nice arc of maturing out of innocence.
Unfortunately, the acting and script are dreadful. Every sentence that is said feels like it's going nowhere and not really directed at anyone, like lots of people are just talking to themselves and they're all a bit stiff. As well everyone seems to just look a little bit lost to me. As well the plot was a bit weird, I'm not completely sold that events that happened in this would happen so smoothly. (I say talking about a science fiction film)
Don't get me wrong, it was interesting and I was entertained, it was just there are a lot of plot holes. The reason Supergirl comes down to earth is portrayed as a life or death event, but when she gets to earth she doesn't exactly rush to go fix it and the film feels a bit more of a slice of life.
It was a nice change though, feeling more light-hearted and joyful. A new side to the world of Superman instead of always saving people from danger, Mr serious at all times, Superhero. The special and visual effects are generally pretty good, as the filmmakers attempt to give you a lot of razzle-dazzle and spectacle.
Overall this is very campy, but an enjoyable watch if you don't focus on some of the plot holes personally I think this is a nice little touch onto the world of Superman. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you want more out of Superman lore then this is a good watch.
5/10
"Lucy Lane: All you need is a couple of streaks and your ears pierced. I could do it for you, it's easy. You just get a needle, heat it up, dab it with some alcohol, and zap! The guys go crazy!
Linda Lee (SuperGirl): My ears what?
Lucy Lane: Pierced. Like and you know, I take a needle, and then I heat it up, dab it with some alcohol and, zap, all the guys go crazy.
Linda Lee (SuperGirl): Because I have holes in my ears?."
