Evil Dead (2013)

Image
Genre: Horror/Thriller           Time: 1h 30mins        Director:  Fede Álvarez Quick Summary:  Five friends decide to spend a weekend in a remote cabin located deep in the forest. When they accidentally summon a dormant demon, they strive to survive its evil ploys. All I'm going to say is this is mostly comprised of  traditional practical f/x work that delights in showering the screen with amounts of blood and gore. I'm loving it. I honestly really loved this remake/sequel.  Jane Levy’s amazing performance is at the centre of that. She delivers arguably the most traumatizing performance I have ever seen. What she does with her face, how she says her lines, and how she performs are one of the most spine-chilling I have witnessed. The use of Special effects makeup just elevates this whole performance, as well as the film overall. It's just so well done it's uncanny.  The film’s only fault is that besid...

Iron Man (2008)

Image
Genre: Action/Adventure        Time: 2h 6mins            Director: Jon Favreau Quick Summary:  When Tony Stark, an industrialist, is captured, he constructs a high-tech armoured suit to escape. Once he manages to escape, he decides to use his suit to fight against evil forces to save the world. This is one of the most impressive superhero movies I have seen as of lately. It has charm and wit to it, all whilst being somewhat relatable and fulfilling action scenes. I honestly believe Robert Downey Jr was born to play Iron man. He fits perfectly. Easily he is able to bring to life this witty, playfully smug engineering genius. His performance makes you believe he is Iron Man. Every line delivered has some form of substance to it even if it’s just playful banter. He brings life to the character and this film lays the foundation for the large imaginative universe of outlandish characters that it has in stor...

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)

Image
Genre: Adventure/Sc-fi         Time: 2h 20mins        Directors:  Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert Quick Summary:  A Chinese immigrant gets unwillingly embroiled in an epic adventure where she must connect different versions of herself in the parallel universe to stop someone who intends to harm the multiverse.  It is brilliant, fabulous, exhilarating, and heartbreaking. It's truly incredible! It has so many themes and ideas, layers and layers together, it's so clever. This is one of the most unique, exciting and outright insane films I've seen, packed with incredible action, yet underpinned by an intensely emotional story .  It throws realism out the window, replacing it instead with playful silliness.  The screenplay is smart and keeps the viewer on their toes though even though there has to be some explaining to do for the rules of the story world, it’s brushed upon in just the right moments through the charact...

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Image
Genre: Action/Adventure          Time: 2hrs 4mins          Director:  Joe Johnston Quick Summary:  During World War II, Steve Rogers decides to volunteer in an experiment that transforms his weak body. He must now battle a secret Nazi organisation headed by Johann Schmidt to defend his nation. There isn't really much to fault with this film, as it's full of funny one-liners, exciting characters and lots of action-packed scenes. The villain is a bit simple, but there is only so much you can do with a "Nazi who has Nazi ideals." Captain America himself is actually very cheesy all whilst still being able to be serious, he really puts on a good performance. His character is a very good portrayal of routing for the underdog gone good.   He wasn’t chosen because he was the biggest or the strongest or the most handsome. He was chosen because of what was in his heart. Honestly, I think that is such a good message for ...

The Muppet Movie (1979)

Image
Genre: Family/Musical               Time:1h  37mins               Director:  James Frawley Quick summary:  Kermit the Frog sets out to pursue a career in Hollywood along with his muppet friends. However, he must evade the owner of a frog-leg restaurant who wishes to kill him. How could you not adore this film, it's wonderful and full of joy! I couldn't ask for a better film to capture the essence and charm of the Muppets. It’s got their silly, surreal sense of humor. It showcases Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear’s wholesome friendship, the absolutely great sing-worthy songs, and hectic montages. Even though they are literally Puppets, they show so many emotions and all have their own distinct personalities, you forget that they aren't actually real. This is one of the best family films, seriously, as Jim Henson includes a lot of jokes for both kids and adults and I honestly really liked ...

Captain Marvel (2019)

Image
Genre: Action/Sci-fi          Time: 2hrs          Director:  Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck Quick Summary:  Amidst a mission, Vers, a Kree warrior, gets separated from her team and is stranded on Earth. However, her life takes an unusual turn after she teams up with Fury, a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. I think this film is very underrated, I really don't think it deserves the hate it gets. Captain Marvel comes in with a wonderful blast of colour and fun energy. I found it very fresh compared to other Marvel films, and I honestly really enjoyed it. It was super engaging and had a super uplifting tone to it. The whole memory loss troupe can be overplayed at this point, but this manages to balance it out and really manages to meld it well with brainwashing. Her memories seem to be sporadic and never seem to match up. I liked this as you really felt as if you were in the same shoes as Vers in trying to figure out her life.   Though...

Halloween kills (2021)

Image
Genre: Horror/Thriller                Time: 1h 46mins           Director:  David Gordon Greens Quick summary:  Michael Myers escapes Laurie's trap and tries to reach her, killing people on his way. On the other hand, Laurie finds support in a group of survivors of his previous rampages This one was very disappointing to me, especially after how good the last one was. I mean, it wasn't bad, but it sure didn't step up the bar that was set.  As soon as the film starts, Micheal brutally demolishes Eleven firefighters as if they were made out of paper and returns on his rampage to find the one that continues to get away.  The overall focus within this one is the community once they learn Micheal is back, ensuring panic quickly erupts throughout the town. They choose to make their own plans to stop him, all whilst explaining their various (and confusing) connections to the killer himself. I d...
