Superman III (1983)

 Genre: Superhero/ Action

Time: 2hours

Director: Richard Lester

Quick Summary: Synthetic kryptonite laced with tar splits Superman in two: good Clark Kent and bad Man of Steel.

Though I do think this one isn't as good as the first two, it's still really fun.

Christopher Reeve is still really good as superman, and for the tone of these films, I do think he fits them. It was sad to see Margot Kidder only have a very very tiny role in this and get replaced as the love interest, which I wasn't too keen on. Yes, she is more caring for him, but I feel like I needed more time to watch their romance develop.

What I found interesting about this was that this explores Superman's "Good" hero side and "Bad" mortal human alter ego. There is even a scene where he is fighting himself, which honestly was really good and one of the better action scenes in this.

The special effects in this were pretty good too, a bit outdated now but really that is the charm of these Superman films. Something I thought was a bit strange was how comedic this one was and that it was more focused on a character called "Guy". He seems to be the main character in this one, the good thing is that he is actually really funny. Richard Pryor plays "Guy" and at first, I wasn't so sure about him, but he really grew on me. He did a really good job in this, going along with the theme of  "Good" vs "Bad".

Unfortunately, the script isn't that good. Everyone's lines seem really simple and robotic. There are also plenty of plot holes within this that I wouldn't even bother trying to chase. It relied too much on the comedy this time, where the first two were still funny, but they still had a seriousness to them. Very obviously there were some themes shoved in such as, "Nicotine and Tar are bad because they made Superman Evil!!".

This dropped and gained my interest throughout this, there were moments where I was fully bored but then it was immediately grabbed by some small action scene. The villain was very weak in my eyes and honestly very bland. The performance isn't terrible, it's just the actual character itself didn't seem that fleshed out.

6/10

" I ask you to kill Superman, and you're telling me you couldn't even do that one, simple thing."
